History of the Centre
Securing our World through Research and Education
Recognising the need to establish an interdisciplinary research and teaching centre to address the problems of transnational crime, the University of Wollongong established the Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention (CTCP) in July 2000. The Minister for Justice and Customs, the Hon Senator Chris Ellison, launched CTCP on 29 June 2001. Key University stakeholders include the Faculties of Law, Commerce, Arts and Informatics.
CTCP is evolving as an Asia-Pacific Regional focal point for the exchange of information and research on Transnational Crime. CTCP has achieved recognition as a Centre of very high standing in Australia and abroad.
Recognizing the Centre’s achievements and synergy with federal security and capacity building policies and objectives Ms. Julie Bishop MP, the Minister for Education, announced a $12 million grant to CTCP on 4 May 2006.
On the 16 May 2006 the Foreign Minister also announced 40 targeted AusAID scholarships over 2007-8 specifically for the Centre and its unique postgraduate programs (MFA, MTCP and LLM (Prosecutions).
The evolution of the Centre into a Global Centre for Excellence, with purpose built facilities on the Innovation Campus at Fairymeadow, Wollongong (anticipated completion 2008), presents a unique opportunity for UOW and its stakeholders to become a truly “Global” centre of excellence.
